The Eurasian Jay (Garrulus glandarius) is a clever, colourful corvid with soft pink-brown plumage and bright blue wing patches that flash through woodland canopies. These jays are opportunistic omnivores, feeding on everything from acorns (their favourite) to insects, small mammals, eggs, and even carrion. In autumn, they hoard thousands of acorns, burying them intelligently in separate locations, a strategy that helps them survive lean months and even plays a part in spreading oak forests. Globally, their numbers are healthy: estimates range from about 33 million to 65 million mature individuals, and their population trend is considered stable. Thanks to their broad range and adaptability, they are classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, though local conservation efforts focus on preserving mature woodlands to support their caching behaviour and nesting needs.
