In the UK, the common nightingale has endured a dramatic collapse—over 90% of its population has disappeared since the late 20th century, leaving just around 5,000–6,000 singing males remaining, largely in southeast England. As a result, it now features prominently on the UK Red List of threatened breeding birds. Habitat loss—due to the decline of scrubby, coppiced woodland and increasing deer pressures—alongside pressures on its wintering grounds in Africa, are key threats. Protected sites like the Knepp Rewilding Estate are now critical lifelines.
